KUSOM Security Management

Developing professionals for managing security functions

Security situation and its perception have both changed considerably in the recent past – as much in the global arena as in Nepal.  With increasing concern for security of individuals, groups, and institutions, the need and demand for better security environment have exponentially grown.  A new understanding of security function in the society is emerging.  This requires a different and comprehensive approach to managing security function across all segments of the society.

Traditional concepts and approaches limited security only to the hard core elements associated with the military and police operations.  They are grossly inadequate to serve the need of the present time.  Security now cuts across political, economic, social, cultural, industrial, and environmental issues both as causes and consequences, deeply influencing the existence and operations of a community and its institutions.  Equally significantly, security is now closely embedded with the basic needs of an individual.  Today, it is integrated into the national development framework.

Responding to this emerging concept of security and the security needs it has created, some universities in the west have recently taken up the challenge of preparing human resources for professionally managing security function in line with the evolving nature of and requirements in the security sector.  In South Asia, Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) is the first to recognize the need for academic initiation in security management study.  With the two years experience of running Post Graduate Diploma program in security discipline, KUSOM, continuing its role as leader management school in the country, now also offers Master degree program Security Management.
